VW Polo - More Energy Efficient by Pete Ridgard

When shopping for a car I know exactly what I want. I want something stylish but solidly built, something that demonstrates my taste in form without compromising on function. The VW Polo fits my needs exactly.
A classic and timeless car, the Polo is sleekly designed (some of the more recent models demonstrating clear influences drawn from big brother, the Golf) but with efficient and reliable engineering. The sharper image of the most recent generation Polo somehow combines aerodynamic styling, with its extended lower lip bumper and integrated wing features, with that reassuring solidity we have come to expect as standard, to create a car that feels sexy yet safe.
Engine choices for the VW Polo are widely varied, accommodating everyone from the classic little old lady who only uses it once a week to collect her pension to the distance driver who likes nothing better than hitting that open road. Encompassing petrol and diesel, engines start at the low end 1.0 petrol motor and top out at the 1.9 litre diesel TDI. The majority of buyers, however, will fall safely between these two extremes.
The standard 53 bhp 1.2 litre petrol is ideal for use in a first car where the driver is unlikely to go much further than the suburbs, but falls short of expectations when taken out of its small-town comfort zone. Meanwhile the 1.4 litre petrol is the economical compromise, costing more than some rivals but hitting top speeds more easily and less noisily!
In 2007, the VW Polo BlueMotion was launched, and with it the 1.4 litre three cylinder TDI diesel, offering 78 bhp and claiming to hit 72 mpg. The most important factor here is the road tax, which falls into duty-free Band A due to impressively low 99g/km CO2 emissions. This was followed by BlueMotion 2 models for those who need their air-con, emitting 104g/km CO2 and therefore placing in Band B, and capable of 71mpg.
The new 2009 models are sleeker and even more energy efficient, offering fuel savings of up to 20% alongside turbo-charged engines and seven-speed DSG transmission. Being the next generation they are slightly larger than their predecessors, handling more like a baby Golf than a Polo, and come with brake assist, anti-skid regulation and ESP stability control as standard. They’re reliable, painless to own, cheap to maintain and hold their value brilliantly. All in all, the VW Polo is a triumph of form and function combined.
