There are some cars that you hear about before have even seen one. These iconic designs seem to have been popular from their very first release right up to the modern day, and are successful in all their incarnations. Alongside design greats like the fun little Mini, sportscars tend to be the beautiful and just as popular competitor.

The Porsche 911 is one such car. If you haven’t seen one of these popular and varied cars driving the streets, then you will probably have heard car enthusiasts chatting about it, or Richard Hammond waxing lyrical about his beloved 911 on Top Gear. Available in a range of models, they all share the same chunky but sleek rear end and elongated nose, but differ dramatically under the hood.

If you are thinking of buying used Porsche 911 (this is probably a vintage car nowadays), then a good place to start is deciding what model and engine is perfect for you. As with all Porsches the choice is spectacular, but here are a few of the key designs to pick from:

For the base entry model Porsche 911, you should opt for the Carrera. This is a great introduction to the brand and the car, allowing you to experience the 6 cylinder engine without having to worry that you will lose control. That said, the Carrera still has a maximum speed of a mighty 180mpg, leaving all competitors sprawling in the dirt. Whilst some of these turn up as used Porsches surprisingly cheaply, if you want to buy it new you will have to shell out over £60k.

For those who like the glamour that accompanies a Porsche rather than the speed, the convertible Cabriolet choice is probably perfect for you. If you do want that little bit extra oomph, however, then choose the sports edition which can really give you the ride of your life with the wind blowing through your hair. Although there are slight hairdresser/fashion designer vibes to the more feminine cabriolet design, this is still a beefy car loved by 911 addicts across the globe.

Middle men have plenty to choose from with top-end middle of the range cars such as the Carrera 4, available as a coupe or a cabriolet. This just gives the car an angrier determined engine under the roof, whilst still being the type of sportscar that you can drive everyday and show off.

Of course, if you are really looking for a race car disguised as a Porsche, then all these options may be just a little tame for you. They are cars that are happy to sit in the garage and to wind their way through village roads and up driveways - and what you were dreaming of was something with a little more attitude. In that case, the perfect vehicle for your dreams is the Used Porsche 911 GT2. Roaring from 0-62 in a blistering 3.7 seconds, this really is the ultimate car, clocking in at a dramatic £128k. Ouch.

Whether you want to shell out on a limited edition or are happy to drive the entry level model, a Porsche like this will always be sought after and incredibly popular - after all, all the years it has been around very few people have produced anything better.
