The Alternative-Fuel Car - Advantages and Disadvantages by Rod Barcelon
November 28, 2009 | admin | Automotive
In two previous articles, we discussed why alternative-fuel cars are becoming more popular, and what choices are available for people who want to own this type of automobile. Today we present the advantages as well as the disadvantages of owning one of these cars.
Advantages
Purchasing cars may be somewhat expensive, but when you speak of long-term cost efficiency, non-traditional fuel cars may actually work best at cutting your budget for fuel. Instead of buying a conventional car, you might as well invest in hybrid cars whose prices are now almost at par with their traditional counterparts.
If you have an existing car, though, you may opt for buying a converter kit to minimize on expenses.
One advantage you can also derive from these cars is that federal tax breaks are applied on some of them. The rate of the tax breaks depends on the state.
Car companies also offer insurance discounts to owners of clean fuel cars on the grounds that they think these owners are more responsible citizens.
Lastly, you become eco-friendly when you opt for a clean fuel engine, since these produce less emissions of harmful byproducts.
Disadvantages
Buying or converting to these clean engines is not really simple. The key issue here is that not everyone can really afford these more expensive cars, even though some of these are already priced closely with cars that run on petroleum. Especially now that there are ongoing economic crises everywhere, money is really tight for everyone.
Another disadvantage is that, although a consumer may want to buy a hybrid car, the production of these cars is at a minimum. This is due to the fact that these unconventional cars are still undergoing current research; therefore the availability of the cars being produced is still limited.
Some of these cars aren’t even proven to be a hundred percent safe for the rider. Though they are really aimed to be a help for the environment, there are also environmental costs needed in its production. A great example for this is the carbon dioxide emitted during the production of hybrids, and also the safety hazards that the batteries put on people using them.
The Future
Quite a simple yet thorough discussion on important points regarding these cars was given. Now the final question is this: What can possibly be the future for this type of automobile? This is a hanging query since the answer depends on the researchers and producers of these cars. Until better research comes out, many consumers might just cut on their fuel budget by reducing their travel mileage and by performing better car maintenance.
