Preparing for a Semester Abroad is Hard to Do By Jen Smith

Published by admin under Education Abroad

Students packing for a trip to another country are often confused - I know I was. It’s not hard to wonder how on earth you’ll manage to have everything you’ll need. After all, you won’t know anyone where you’re going, or even speak the language most times.

While no advice or tidbit of information can truly prepare someone to spend time in another country, there is some advice to be had. Most importantly, prepare early! Items like passports and vaccinations are extremely important, and may take a long time to get.

Of course, the only way to know exactly which visas and vaccinations you’ll need is to do some reading about the place you’re going. This reading can also help you prepare for customs requirements for your return trip - everyone likes to bring home gifts and it’s important not to buy something that could cause problems when you try to bring it back home.

Familiarizing yourself with the travel requirements, though, isn’t the only learning you’ll need to do. Each country has its own weather, culture, and expectations of travelers. It’s important to have some idea of what to expect when you step off the plane. However, remember that reading other peoples’ accounts can only go so far in preparing you for your own experiences!

Finally, the best advice I was given: Pack less clothing than you think you’ll need. You will almost certainly buy more clothes while you’re in the country. You’ll also want to remember that clothes, souvenirs, and gifts for family and friends back home take up space, so packing with some extra room in your suitcases is a good idea. I managed to pack an extra bag inside my suitcase, so when it came time for the trip home I had plenty of extra space. Still, you can always ship any non-essential items back home in the mail if you do run out of space.

So, when planning to study or travel abroad, a student’s best friend is planning - not procrastination. Spend a bit of time making a list of everything you’ll want to do, and what dates you’ll need to do it by. This should make study abroad a breeze.

Jennifer Smith finished her degree at Florida State University by spending a semester studying abroad in the Republic of Panama. She writes for many travel websites.

Central Queensland University Facilities on Campus

Published by admin under Tutorials

Central Queensland University Facilities on Campus

The concept of adjunct care was established in answer to parents’ demands for a short-term, on-premises child-minding facility at places such as shopping centres, sports clubs, and conference venues. It aims to provide informal care for limited time periods, and as such is not governed by the Childcare Act, except in instances when negligence is alleged and some form of investigation or disciplinary action is required. There are no regulations pertaining to staffing levels, maximum capacity (number of children) toys and playground equipment or segregation of age levels. As such, this type of care has many disadvantages, the main two being a two-hour maximum time limit per child, and the requirement for parents to remain on the premises (usually in the same building).

Most providers of adjunct care employ a person to staff the facility for the sole purpose of protecting the property of the business (provider). This person requires no formal training in the care of children, and is not expected to engage in such activities as changing nappies or feeding children. Unless the workplace already expects employees to hold a current First Aid and/or Resuscitation certificate, a person staffing an adjunct care facility needn’t have any experience to enable them to deal with problems that may arise. Some providers don’t employ anyone at all. Rockhampton Shopping Fair’s facility is checked on by the cleaners for hygiene and cleaning requirements only.

As a service-based organisation, the CQU Student Association is equipped with a staffing structure capable of handling such a venture. As outlined above, it may not be necessary to employ a person specifically to supervise the day-to-day operation of the facility, rather the duties could be added to the workload of an existing staff member. The organisation has an established accounts/administration department, as well as a management team, both of whom would posses the necessary skills to ensure efficient operation of the facility. The Student Association also supports a strong marketing department and several other ‘help’ services, which would aid in the promotion of the venture.

The requirement for parents to remain on the premises was discussed with representatives from the Department of Families, Youth, and Community Care with regard to CQU’s Smart City (referred to as the Southern Precinct of the Rockhampton campus). Their response was that each ‘precinct’ would be treated as individual premises, and therefore a separate facility would need to be established for both precincts. This has implications regarding the staffing suggestion made above, but more importantly raises location issues.

With several vacant offices currently available on the Rockhampton Campus Northern Precinct, there may be avenues for the Student Association to bargain with CQU and secure a space suitable for a childcare facility. However, with the Southern Precinct concept still relatively new, locating suitable space in Smart City may not be as simple. It would be anticipated that various other departments within the university would be vying for some of the ‘new’ space. Space at the developing regional campuses may also be difficult to secure, however some areas have establishing community projects, the organizers of which could be approached for assistance.

The main costs associated with establishing and operating an adjunct care facility, whether on one or both precincts of the Rockhampton campus, and possibly on several other CQU campuses, would be standard overheads: rent and electricity. Staff wages in this instance are extremely variable (even optional), however, cleaning expenses would need to be taken into account. Set up costs would consist largely of toys, playground and educational equipment, although this too could be minimized due to lack of regulations.

This type of childcare is generally offered by organisations as a courtesy service to their clients. This and the loose nature of the service make it difficult for providers to charge fees for the service. The providing organisation must therefore subsidize the facility from other areas in the budget.

Many people have suggested that it would be simple for the Student Association to provide an adjunct care facility. This is understandable, as there are minimal establishment and operating costs and no real standards, as no license is required. There is a trap however, as has been outlined. Although all of the above are true, there is a huge issue should negligence be alleged. Also, the cost of insurance needs to be considered. A high-risk venture would likely attract higher premiums than normal, and in the event that a claim is submitted, normal premiums will skyrocket.

How to Fill Out a Scholarship Application - 6 Rules to Always Follow By H R Miller

Published by admin under Financial-Aid

Filling out scholarship applications can be very frustrating and confusing. Every scholarship has different requirements and different deadlines. It is difficult enough to finish just one college application let alone fill out several scholarship applications.

But don’t worry! I have a few tips that will help you get through the process a lot smoother.

Read The Applications carefully

Every scholarship is different. Unfortunately no two applications have the same requirements. One application may ask for 1000 word essay while another one may ask for a 500 word essay. That’s why it is so important to read and get a full understanding of what is required before you submit your application. Otherwise it will be discarded and you would have wasted precious time.

Prepare, prepare, prepare.

Have you ever heard the statement “proper preparation prevents poor performance”? The 5 P’s. This could not be further from the truth. You see, if you are smart, and I know you are, you will be applying for several scholarships in the hope of possibly going to school absolutely free. You don’t want to wait until the last minute and throw together an essay or personal statement. Prepare in advance. Practice your personal statement. I would recommend you start doing scholarship research and start writing the rough draft of your personal statement 6 months before the deadline. Take time out a few times a week to work on it. This is very important stuff. These companies look at thousands of applications a day. You want to make sure yours stands out.

Work within the space you are given

By this I mean do not use continuation sheets on your scholarship applications. They give you specific requirements for a reason. If they say 1000 words keep it at 1000 words. This is why it is so important to prepare. List only what is important for that particular application. If you have extra space after you do that then you can add in some extra stuff.

Give them what they want

Always give the provider of the scholarship exactly what they are asking for. If they are looking for someone with leadership skills then give them an example of your leadership skills. If they want someone with excellent writing skills then show that to them in your application. Use your personality traits to your advantage.

Explain why you want to study a particular subject

Many mess up on this step. They fail to give a logical reason why they want to study a particular subject. There has to be a reason why you chose your major of choice. Relay this in your application.

Proofread

Before you mail off your application make sure you proofread it. Have someone else proofread it as well. Sometimes a fresh pair of eyes can catch something you might not. Make sure you are getting your message across very clear. If it passes the 2 proofreads mail it off and believe for the best.
