New Year is always a year for new resolutions and new events. People make lot of plans and resolutions to improve in the coming days. Some of the Top Ten 2009 New Year Resolutions are:

1. Have Balanced Food/Diet & Regular Exercises
Today there are many people having health problems. There is a saying that ‘Health is Wealth’. Without health, there is no wealth. You need to take good care of your health. With rising competition and work stress, health needs lot of attention. The most important thing is having a healthy, balanced and nutritious food. Eating the right food is important. You can have vegetables, salads, cooked foods, fish, fowl, fruits, nuts, diary products, herbal teas and juices. This should be taken in the right proportion and at the right interval of time to maintain a balanced diet. Regular exercise is very much necessary in order to keep yourselves fit.

2. Protect Animals, Trees and Conserve Water
Nature is filled with wonders. Flowers and trees are Gods biggest wonders. It is the duty of every person to protect trees as well as animals. This will help in reducing pollution and create a good environment. Animals are very important and it is very difficult to think life without animals. We should try to restrict the usage of water and measures should be taken to ensure that water is not wasted.

How to Avoid Mental Biases and Make the Right Decisions By Dr. Larina Kase

How to Avoid Mental Biases and Make the Right Decisions By Dr. Larina Kase

You know that feeling when you’re faced with an important decision, and you can feel your blood pressure rising? You’re nervous about making the wrong choice. The issue is an important one and you don’t want to mess up by selecting the wrong path.

I like to say that fear is often more than “False Evidence Appearing Real.” It is sometimes there for a reason, to tell us to proceed with caution. This is true with decision-making because our minds fall prey to many biases.

For example, noble-prize winning economist Daniel Kahneman and his colleague Amos Tversky discovered a mental short-cut that we tend to take when making decisions, which they called the “availability” heuristic.

We don’t weigh all of our options equally. Instead, we assign greater weight to options that we readily think of, assuming that if we think of them readily, they must be more frequent. For example, if I can easily think of red BMWs I assume that red is one of the common BMW colors.

This is only partly true. We think of options readily if they are dramatic or easy to remember. A red car is easier to remember than a grey car. I may have a neighbor and a client with a red BMW so it’s fresh in my mind.

As another example, if your friend had just told you how horrible a new restaurant is, you would probably decide not to go there, despite reading a dozen positive reviews. Or if someone asked you what the leading cause of death is: accidents or diseases, you may say they are equal or you may say accidents (recalling all those vivid 11pm news programs), when in reality diseases are 16 times more likely to lead to death than accidents.

So what do we do about these mental biases?

First, we need to be aware of them. When making a decision, ask yourself if it’s possible that you are being swayed by a mental short-cut. Ask yourself, “What would be the path of least resistance for my brain to go down?” If a mental bias is present, resist its influence.

Second, realize that everyone has different biases. If a decision is an important one, collect opinions from different people to balance out one another’s bias. A study by financial analyst Paul Johnson showed that group predictions (for who would win an Academy Award) consistently outperform individual predictions.

Third, use thought and memory bias to your advantage. If, for instance, you’re a business owner make your testimonials vivid by filming people genuinely and enthusiastically sharing their stories. This will help prospective clients or customers remember the benefits of your business. If you get my marketing newsletter you know that I’m always advocating for standing out. This is another reason why you want to stand out and be memorable.

Successful Resolutions By Carrie Fleharty

Successful Resolutions By Carrie Fleharty

The ultimate success formula begins with clarity. Now that the New Year is upon us, many of us have made resolutions or have written down what they want to attract for the year. In other words you have determined what you want and desire. The question is why do you want that? What purpose does it serve? Once that is foreknown you will need to devise an action plan to develop strategies to obtain or accomplish your goals.

Your goals are just those very things you want and desire. We often flounder right here at this specific time and place. We forget to set up and develop our action plans. Those action plans are the make or break of a successful endeavor; whether it’s a New Year’s resolution or something you want to accomplish.

I firmly believe that the reason so many people who break their resolutions is because they left out the how to’s or the action steps. For example if you want to lose weight, you decide that going to the gym would be a good plan. This goes well, until you decide to stop going. You forgot to write down the steps that need to be taken in order for you to show up at the gym three-four times a week. By not setting those action plans, you have set yourself up for failure.

Here’s the way to help you become more successful in all of your endeavors:

1.     Look at your resolutions, your desires, or your goals; decide which one is the most important at this time. Imagine doing or having exactly that. Does it feel good? Do you still want it? If yes, then go to step two if not then look again and make another decision.
2.    The decision to have what you want and desire is yours and yours alone. So, list out the steps that you would need to take in order to have or achieve said goal. (This is the important part, because this is what is lacking.) This list doesn’t have to be in any order, just listed.
3.    Decide which of these steps will become the first, the second and so forth. This is the beginning of success, and achievement.
4.    Look at all that you have put down so far. What is lacking? What is the major aspect missing from you becoming successful? Now is the time to make a commitment to yourself, and take the first step.

Clarity is the first step in becoming aware of what you truly want and desire. Purpose or reasons will give the answer to the question of why you want that specific experience, or that specific goal. Without clarity and purpose why would you set a resolution or goal? This would mean that you are setting yourself up for failure; failure to adhere to your goal. Let’s take the weight loss example: If you plan on losing weight and the reason you want that weight off is because you are being made fun of at the office, then you will fail. Now, if you take the weight loss, and decide you want to lose the weight because you want to live a healthy lifestyle then chances is you will lose the weight easily. You’ll also set some action steps in accordance.

Before the action steps can be taken, you will need to know how to take those steps. Which step comes first, and which comes second, and so forth. Look at the strategy of how you will achieve your goal. When looking at these strategies you will find obstacles in your way. Those obstacles as well keep us from becoming successful. Our strategies will enable us to develop a plan to overcome those obstacles when they arise. Back to our example of weight loss: The obstacle might be time, so you will need to write yourself an appointment in your calendar for the gym. The other obstacle is eating unhealthy foods. You now will be able to choose your food more wisely because you have set up a plan.

As the famous Nike ® commercial states: “Just Do It.” That’s all it will take for you to become successful and achieve what you want and desire. This means work for you, because if you want something badly enough to go through this process then you will have to work hard for it. My theory is that if you plan, do the work, then you will reach your goal. Your goals will not manifest themselves by magic. That is our wish, not our reality.

3 Tips to Make Your New Years Resolutions Stick By Andrew Peacock

Published by admin under Self Improvement, Success

3 Tips to Make Your New Years Resolutions Stick By Andrew Peacock

It’s that time of year again; the time we decide to lose weight, get fit, sort out our finances, work harder, and all those other things we promise ourselves every year and manage to adhere to for about a week at most. But why is it that New Years Resolutions are so frequently broken, and what can you do about it this year?

THE ‘WHEN’

Well, the key issue as I see it is when we make these life-changing decisions. When you try to change yourself so drastically (because let’s face it, New Years Resolutions are rarely minor shifts in our behaviour), you are doing so because of a date on a calendar. You’re not driven by some powerful emotional event. You’re not driven by a definite goal at some point in the future. You’re doing it because it’s the first of January.

And just how motivating is that?

THE ‘WHAT’

Secondly, there’s rarely any thought put into the resolution itself. There are certain resolutions that crop up again and again. To lose weight. To get fit. To stop drinking. To stop smoking. To get out of debt. Often, people decide these things because that’s what they resolved to do last year. Or because it’s just expected of them. Again, there’s often no real thought put into picking a resolution that fits into alignment with the real-world hopes and plans that people have for the coming year.

THE ‘HOW’

The writer Antoine de Saint-Exupery said “A goal without a plan is just a wish”, and that’s our third point. Setting a goal like “I’m going to lose weight” doesn’t take into account how much weight, the deadline attached, or how you’re going to do it. Again, this entails a bit of thought - more thought than most people put into their resolutions. There is a huge difference between losing 10lbs and losing 10 stone. There is also a huge difference between losing weight through exercise as compared to dieting or surgery. Without putting some thought into the means by which you’ll achieve your resolution, it’s unlikely that you’ll achieve it.

THE SOLUTION

So the question is: how can you more faithfully stick to your New Years Resolutions this year? Well - that’s a fantastic question. It leads you to actually *thinking* about the process of setting and sticking to resolutions, and by thinking about it, you might come up with some ideas. Additionally, the three points above are indicators of what to do:

1. Pick resolutions that are not just “New Years Resolutions”, but real, personal, thought out-goals.

2. Be specific about the details of the goal - how much weight will you lose? By when? How?

3. The final point is to set personal resolutions at times other than New Year, but that’s a topic for another time and another article.

New Year needn’t be a time where you hide away from the world because you’re ashamed of talking about the same resolutions as you made last year. By changing the way you approach resolutions, you’ll make it much more likely that you’ll succeed this time round.

For specific advice on how to work with your resolutions in a way that makes it almost guaranteed you’ll succeed, see the 23-page report covering the questions I use during my annual review, free of charge, athttp://www.empowering-questions.com
