Reality TV Lets Indian Student Study Abroad By Hugh Nelson

Published by admin under Education Abroad

Britain’s Warwick University arrived at a novel way to attract a top foreign student from India. Working in conjunction with the British High Commission, Warwick offered a four-year engineering course to the winner of an Indian reality TV show called Airtel Scholar Hunt.

The program, described in a BBC-TV news feature as “a cross between The Apprentice and Mastermind,” offered as its grand prize an education abroad, with an estimated worth of around 45,000 pounds sterling. Predictably, thousands of competitors applied to contend. After eight weeks of quizzes, interviews and exams, the winner was chosen. The coveted prize went to 18-year-old Arvin Aradhya, of Delhi.

Interviewed by the BBC on the Warwick campus, an obviously excited Mr. Arahdya first praised the English weather. Then he went on to say what it was that he liked most about Warwick: “the diversity.” He made it clear that he was talking about academic diversity: “having all fields of learning on the same campus.”

For Warwick, as important was achieving a diversity of the student population. The University’s Dr. Tony Prince called the reality-TV venture “a new and novel way to attract students” - in the case of Indian students, a group that British universities are at pains to draw, and to draw away from the competition in the United States.

The enterprise tapped into deepest aspirations the new Indian middle class for their children. An education abroad is one of the hallmarks of those aspirations, and an all-expenses-paid one was sure to fire the Indian imagination - and did

Young Mr. Aradhya’s own aspirations are, literally, “for the stars.” His ambition is to be an astronaut. Given his brilliant start, and the lift his victory on Scholar Hunt has given him, there’s every reason to expect the young scholar to achieve blast-off.

Why You Should Consider a Summer Internship By Dan Keller

Published by admin under Job Search Techniques

If you are a high school student or college student you should consider an internship this summer. As a teenager during the summer, you have many options. You can do nothing, take a typical summer job or take a summer internship. I would strongly suggest that you consider taking a summer internship. I will highlight the advantages of a summer internship and offer tips on how to land one.

First off, if you are in high school, a summer internship will look great on your colleage application. This will help you stand out among your peers as only a small percentage of student will intern during the summer.

Secondly, taking a summer internship will help you choose what career you like or dislike. It is like “test driving” a career.

Internships for teens are more difficult to obtain because the competition is stiffer, but there are some steps you can take to land that summer internships.

The most important tip is to network and be vocal, tell everyone what you are interested in doind. Tell your network on MySpace and Facebook, ask your guidance counselor and teachers for help. Ask your parents to ask their friends and colleagues. Ask your friends parents and have them ask there friends. The more people you have working on your behalf the better off you will be.

You can also look online, as there are some good websites that advertise summer internship openings. Make sure you have a good cover letter and resume ready and start applying. A site I recommend for teen jobs and summer internships is http://teenjobscene.com

Published by admin under Financial-Aid

When students start thinking about scholarships they tend to think of only the most common ones and also those offered by large companies. This means that close to a million others will also be applying for that very same scholarship each year. Almost every college and university awards at least one scholarship every year. So instead of go after the scholarships that everyone knows about try looking for scholarships offered by your school. This will eliminate a lot of competition.

A very low percentage of students apply for institutional scholarships so this leaves the door wide open for you. Only a few of these will be full scholarships. But no matter how big or small the scholarship is just remember that every bit helps.

The application process for institutional scholarships is not different than the application process for outside scholarships. But remember that the qualifications and guidelines for every scholarship are different. Make sure you understand everything before you start filling things in.

There are many benefits associated with applying for institution offered scholarships. The first benefit is that you will not have to wait as long to get an answer. Not a lot of students apply for these scholarships so they can sort through them rather quickly and give you an answer within a few weeks instead of months.

Another advantage is that you will get the chance to a chance to understand how the scholarship and grant system works within your school. Even if you don’t get it you will still have learned some very important information which you can us when applying for the scholarship the next time around.

When it comes to institutional scholarships you really have nothing to lose. Though applying can be a tedious task it all turns out to be well worth it in the end.
