Is your old car starting to wear out, but you just haven’t thought about replacing it yet? Indeed, buying a new car can be a disheartening prospect, and especially in uncertain times like these, many motorists prefer to put off buying a new car. Well, whilst one considers choices such as what make or model of care you’re looking for, you can be certain of one element of the buying process; where to buy your car from.

There are mainly three different types of car dealers: Official, Franchise and Independent. When searching for a new car, be sure to consider all three different types, as each car dealer will carry its own benefits and disadvantages. Either way, if you do your homework right, you’ll have a deeper insight into the deal you’re looking for.

Official car dealers can offer the most comprehensive service to prospective customers. They are often associated with specific manufacturers, thus they can offer more inclusive advice on specific models of car, should you be looking for them. You can also be sure that the car you buy is of ‘approved’, high standards, and the dealership themselves will offer an array of aftercare and support to purchasers such as extended warranties and guarantees. This comprehensive service does, however, come at a slightly higher price than from other types of car dealers. Ultimately it’s your decision - depending on the type of car you wish to buy, such an expense may prove worthwhile.

Purchasing your car from a franchise or chain car dealer may be a cheaper option, but the prices are lower for a reason. Some dealers are associated with individual manufacturers, so may be able to offer a deeper insight and advice about specific cars. The variety of cars available on the forecourt is often wider, whilst the quality condition of the cars is equally as varied. Many dealerships do still offer the wide range of facilities such as warranties and servicing, so be sure to compare the deals offered here with those offered in Official car dealers.

Independent car dealers are almost certainly the cheapest available to you. The range of dealer facilities such as warranties and servicing will be limited, but the variety of cars available can be conveniently extensive - luxury 4×4s and budget entry level cars are often in the same forecourt, allowing for easy comparison. However, one should always be sure they know exactly what it is they are purchasing: independent garages may have ‘cut corners’ to save costs somewhere along the line. This is certainly not applicable to every independent dealer; it is only ever a few who ruin it for the majority. But, as ever, it is always wise to be aware and vigilant. It’s your money, and nobody wants any nasty surprises!
