Buying your first car can be a very exciting albeit scary experience. You may not know an awful lot about cars or even what to look for when buying one, whether it be new or second hand. The most important thing to do first is to ask around your area to find out which car dealers have the best reputations. The last thing you want to happen is for you to be taken for a ride (pun intended!) by a dodgy car dealer and end up with something that is going to make the ‘first car’ experience a bad one.

The chances are that you are young and have saved up money to pay for your first vehicle, or perhaps your parents are contributing in some way. Either way you should focus on spending the money wisely, as you will need a car that will last and that will always be able to get you from A to B.

Once you have found a reputable car dealer, take your time asking questions and looking around. With the anticipation of driving around in your very own car it is all too easy to get excited over a particular model without learning about its history and condition. These things may sound boring now, but there are important things to check on before you part with any cash.

Ask the car dealer about whether he knows about the history of the car, and does he own the documents to show previous repairs, servicing and maintenance? Make sure you have someone with you who can give a second opinion, whether it is a parent or a friend. You don’t have to be experts on cars to be able to ascertain whether one is a good buy or not, it really is all common sense.

Give the outside, and inside, a good check over and do question anything that seems wrong to you or that you don’t understand. Make sure the mileage count matches up to the wear and tear on the inside of the car as a low mileage with lots of wear can be a sign of illegal tampering. Check that the wheels aren’t too worn, and above all ask the car dealer if you can take it for a test drive. There wouldn’t be much point in buying a car if you didn’t like the way it handled or it was uncomfortable to sit in.

Once you have made your choice and have thought it through thoroughly, ensure that the car dealers have given you all the paperwork that you need. The most essential thing to remember however, is to enjoy your first car, and use it to learn about what you would like from cars you may buy in the future. Enjoy it and have fun, it’s what first cars are all about.
